- France has enforced a state of emergency, flying in hundreds of police and military reinforcements to restore order in the overseas territory of New Caledonia which has seen mass protests and riots over the past weeks that resulted in several deaths. The deadly violence erupted over a French voting reform plan that indigenous Kanaks say will dilute their voice.

Kanaks had 3 attempts to vote for independence and lost every single one of those votes and even strategically boycotted the last vote because they knew they would lose that one as well. The irony is that these independence elections are largely rigged in their favor as well and they still lost because not only can they not convince the other minority groups, many of which have lived on the island for nearly 200 years, they can't even convince the entirety of their own people, with some Kanaks voting to remain an autonomous region of France.

@Aryanwood Taking a leaf out of what Hamas are doing. If the world supports the undemocratic approach h to Palestinian statehood, it makes sense to do the same. And since Macron supports the undemocratic approach to Palestinian statehood, why can't he do the same for New Caledonia.

@@dylanmccallister1888they completely boycotted the last referendum (which they would have very likely won), and the French government went ahead with the vote anyways, to give itself a smoke screen of consent. Do some research yourself

@@houssemsamuel2143 Except the Kanaks don't want to give anyone voting rights who aren't Kanaks, which is why the ethnic French as well as other minority groups who have lived on the island for 100s of years vote against the independence vote.
@@antoinedemm7533 the minority groups are there because the French government literally encourages immigration there to slowly replace the local population so I'm not surprised the locals ain't happy

There have recently been 2 referendums on independence , both resulted in a vote to stay with france , just because a minority decides to become violent doesnt mean the will of the majority should be trampled on . If the french pulled out NC would become another haiti
